URIS CENTER FOR EDUCATION | NEW YORK, NY
(Designed while at Spagnola & Associates; Senior Designer: Maynard Kay)
The Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education is the educational hub of the Metropolitan Museum of Art--housing classrooms, lecture halls, and a central meeting space, Diane W. Burke Hall. Renovated by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates, Spagnola & Associates was asked to design wayfinding and signage for the 25,000 square foot space. The final design draws from the traditional materials of the architecture (antiqued bronze) while meeting the challenge of communicating events to large quantities of visitors and maintaining a youthful, friendly, feel through electronic and projected displays.
The traditional bronze material is contrasted with a youthful typeface, DIN, and a contemporary fabrication method (CNC milling) which highlights donor names in the bronze with a gold appearance.
