INNOVATION STUDIO | ECO-INDUSTRIAL PARK

This project (a collaboration between industrial designers, architects, and landscape architects at the Rhode Island School of Design) demonstrates how Rhode Island's only landfill could become an environmental, economical, and cultural center for the state by using new technologies and clever processing of materials to negate waste and create industry. Through research and systemic life-cycle design planning, opportunities for industries to utilize each other wastes for power or raw material were pinpointed. The result is 'interlocking industrial ecologies' which use pure waste from the landfill as a starting point to power a more sustainable, compostable, bioplastics industry. At the end of their life-cycle, the bioplastics fuel an enhanced composting facility--which is used to generate new plants for the local ecology, community, and bioplastics industry.
